What is a
charter school?

Here’s the simple answer (that’s why you came to us, right?!): A charter school is a publicly-funded but independently run K-12 school with a physical location for in-person learning. Charter schools have the freedom to develop unique learning focuses and environments outside of the typical public district school experience to serve students with varying needs and interests.

What’s the process to start a charter school in ND?

You can find more on that here, but in a nutshell, you’ll need to do the following:

Determine your ideal student

Decide what area you want to serve

Decide what kind of school you want to be

Establish a governing board

Gather a ton of information and documentation

Find a location

Apply for your Charter Performance Agreement

Get approval from the Department of Public Instruction

Market your school

Launch your school within a year of approval

Meet your annual targets and legal requirements

Apply for renewal after five years
